  Whroo Cemetery Interment List

Unveiling of the Whroo name plaques

After many months of work this event  took place on June 25th at Whroo.  The interment list ( as far as we are able) and the known details are now displayed on two bronze plaques discreetly placed in the centre of the cemetery.
My personal thanks to Jim Deslandes who was the liaison between the relevant people and the final result,..... at times it was a rocky road. For me this was the recognition for over 20 years of painstaking work, finding the names and details { using only primary documents ) and  I was able to fulfill a promise.
The afternoon was pleasant with many descendants attending and even the threatening rain held off.

After over a year the Shire have upheld the recommendations by the Heritage Advisor and the illegal and incorrect name plaques, and noticeboard, in the cemetery must be removed.

Now one hopes the external noticeboard suggested will have the correct information displayed.

The Planning Permit for the cemetery also states all future monuments be in accordance with a strict set of designs. One would hope the Trust realise these may only be erected BY THE FAMILIES if the grave can be identified.

I will state again, it is the duty of the Trust to get these locations correct, not by guesswork but from proven documentary evidence.

Hopefully some communication will take place and this will be achieved.

An Ongoing Saga...... since June 2013

The Whroo Cemetery Trust is holding an information and discussion morning on June 8th at 11.30 am at the cemetery with a view to asking the INVITED families and descendants of those buried there their opinions on proposed further projects.

The new fence and general clean up of the cemetery are to be commended ( although the fence was originally designed to keep animals out, a plain wire fence will not) the Trust has already commenced placing name plaques and this is causing consternation in the community. Those already placed there have been proved to be erroneous in some cases,  with little regard for their accuracy. This need not happen as my research has been able to identify some locations, unfortunately the vast majority will never be known.

For those attending I would ask yourselves, why is this not a Community Consultation gathering ( instead of INVITED guests) and what proof does the Trust have that their name plaques are correct?

I have made several offers to assist them with this, in order that accurate historical data is used, they have refused to take advantage of my well researched and commended information.

The role of a Cemetery Trust is clearly laid down in the Rules and Regulations issued by the relevant Government Department , their actions are specific and limited.

Surely any work in an historic cemetery is duty bound to be as accurate and proven as possible given existing primary documentary evidence. I would suggest you check that the grave allocated to an ancestor of yours is labelled correctly, and if not please ask why not when there is accurate research data available.

It is with great sadness that I  heard my good friend and stalwart historian Yvonne Cochrane died recently.
She was as passionate about local history, and the preserving of it , as I am. Due to her tireless efforts the bush cemetery at Graytown was not eradicated  20 years ago. Along with help from some Army volunteers the cemetery was cleared, marked out and now is there for everyone to see and visit.
Whilst suffering from a severe illness she championed my work on the Whroo cemetery, and was suitably appalled at the inability of the current Trust to recognise the need for accurate work , or to recognise my research, although government departnments have. For that I will be eternally grateful.

As i walk around the bush she will be with me.

Hello and thankyou for coming.
I have been an historical researcher for years and can liken it to being a detective. The notion of history has always fascinated me , and with an English background I recall walking around Saxon and Norman churches with my parents as a child. All those carved knights on tombstones..who were they? why are they here??
Being brought up and later living in Wiltshire ( the home of Stonehenge and Avebury) it is impossible not to be aware of history. Taking part in archaeological digs with London University is quite an experience..and was usually cold and windy.
After moving to Australia there were more things to explore , and people are always the key. So sprung the interest in Family Research ( over 500 families to date) and cemeteries, for it is IN the cemeteries that their story starts.
My passion for this area, and Whroo in particular has not abated and the work expanded when Goulburn Diggings Research started. From the beginning it was obvious that the markings on maps were incorrect , gullies were bigger than shown and often run into each other. What was suprising to us was that this work had never been done in an organised way before.
So it happened that over ten years of fieldwalking , mapping, recording and exploring began............ and it continues.

Now onto a more serious subject.
I hope you have noticed the Copyright warnings on every page. They are there to protect my work from theft , which unfortunately has happened before and I dont want it to happen again.
I would just state that copying any part of it for republishing  is illegal..... the Register in particular. I know that some of the primary sources I used to compile it are not generally available .
You are very welcome to use this site in your research, that is why I have published it.
If you have a genealogical website or group I would be delighted if you would link this site to it.

If you have a question  ,  need to confirm something, or would like me to trace your tree then just contact me.
